The End Of Civilisation As We Now Know It

An experimental short by William McAndrew | 2023

The End Of Civilisation As We Now Know It is an experimental piece that incorporates visual noise and feedback to explore the existiential noise of our vastly digital age. It is the merge of complex feedback distortions with inserts from Orson Welle’s Citizen Kane. The feedback effects were achieved by pointing a late 90’s camcorder at an 80’s CRT TV which is set to display the image of the camcorder, creating an endless, unsolvable, unstable loop of light and visual noise.

Given the camcorder’s low-quality output, and the low resolution of the Citizen Kane DVD, it was intended to keep the film low-resolution, adding a further degree of digital noise to emphasise the true ugliness and chaos of a digital existence. Further, I added some feedback and distortion effects to my guitar to provide audio to some of the more spectacular visual distortions I captured.
