A Man Paints A Woman
Directed by Thomas van Gool, & Prospera Holder Young
A Man Paints A Woman is an intimate exploration of perception - perception of opposite genders, self perception and the desire to be perceived in a certain way. As Co-Production Designer, I specialised in working with the paint and canvas sequences which would be overlayed and intercut throughout. These served as abstract representations of the film’s themes, where each brushstroke, falling blob of paint, colour choice or coffee-stain pattern could represent veiled hostility, lust, envy, gender etc. The inclusion of these inserts can be attributed to the directors’ talented and poetic vision, and it was a privilege to be able to assist them in the process.
